About

Aloha and welcome to our site! We are mother & daughter bringing the aloha spirit to everyone we meet. Our vision is to live in a world of akahai (meaning kindness, to be expressed with tenderness), lōkahi (meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony), ʻoluʻolu (meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness), haʻahaʻa (meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty), and ahonui (meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance).

Moʻīkeha is a kumu hula of the hula group Kahula o Nā Mamo o Moʻīkeha based out of Hilo, Hawaiʻi on Big Island.

The name Mo‘ikeha can be ‘described as one who follows a course of action, to master spiritual knowledge, to attain great heights to overcome obstacles and suffering.’

Reared from her ‘ohana of Maui, Kumu Mo‘ikeha started dancing hula at the age of three. Her first lessons were from her mother and aunties. The family had their own Hawaiian musical group and Mo‘ikeha danced in many performances. As an adult she has had formal studies from such notable Kumuhula’s as Auntie Naomi Kalama of Ka Pā Kanoelehua o Ka Halema‘uma‘u, Miss Coline Aiu of Halau Hula O Maiki, and Kumu Pattye Wright of Na Puakea o Ko'olaupoko.

Mo'ikeha has taught Hawaiian Studies in the Kupuna Program of the Dept. of Education in Hawaii for 7 years. Her halau Kahula o Na Mamo O Mo‘ikeha has been open for about 5 years now and Kumu Mo‘ikeha is teaching kahiko (ancient) style hula as well as ‘auana (modern) style hula. As a teacher of hula, Kumu Mo‘ikeha believes it takes a certain kind of person to study hula because of the commitment it requires to the art and culture. “Hula is a never ending study that can keep you busy for a lifetime” .

Ahonui is the alakaʻi for Kahula o Nā Mamo o Moʻīkeha. She began dancing at a young age in California with kumu hula Naomi Kalama. Her dancing experience comes from a variety of teachers, yet it was her mother who inspired her to learn the dances of her culture.

Ahonui graduated from Kamehameha Schools and entered into the Hawaiian Language program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Hawaiian Studies and continued to earn her teaching certificate through Kahuawaiola, a teaching program dedicated to Hawaiian medium education.

To Ahonui, the study of hula is a way of integrating past and present spirituality to heal the heart. Spirit is all around us and hula is a way of embracing that essence.
